"Soup"erman Tackles Hunger

On April 19th, Shire Pharmaceuticals announced Owen J. Roberts High School the top award winner of the 2012 Shire’s The Great Food Fight!  With over 22,000 pounds of donated canned goods, OJR topped the scales against 21 other schools competing to raise donations for Philabundance. More than 71 tons of food was collected in the region as part of the campaign.

OJR’s Food Fighter, Jessica Venonsky, sophomore class officer and Student Government Chairperson for the Fundraising Committee, accepted the $10,000 award at the ceremony which was held at the Philabundance Relief Center in Philadelphia.

“The statistics are staggering; there is such a great need for what we have accomplished”, explains Venonsky, “It’s a win, win situation for everyone.  Philabundance is able to use these donations to help even more families struggling to feed their children while OJR students get first-hand experience as to how public services like Philabundance works.  We want to thank everyone who participated.
There were so many facets in pulling off this effort and everyone pitched in from the elementary schools, individual families, students, and teachers. Significant corporate donors include Drumheller Construction, JT Painting and Specialty Coating, M-Line, Coventry Soccer, Stowe Oil, Frame Construction, and DeVito Landscaping.  Even Dr. Soeder, our acting superintendent, donated her time and sewed our mascot’s costume, which was a huge success.
The prize money will be put to good use with a portion going to the North Coventry Food Pantry, which does not benefit from Philabundance.
The vision for the high school’s food drive extravaganza was directed by Student Government and included an advisory competition, dress down day, Cardi Art Day, and collections at various high school events.  The Art Club put together a poster campaign, Key Club collected cash donations, while Anchor Club canvassed local neighborhoods asking for can donations.  The elementary schools participated in a brown bag collection after kicking off the program with a visit from the high school Philabundance mascot, Souperman.

The Great Food Fight! is an annual food drive that helps thousands of families in the Delaware Valley who are in need.  The canned goods benefit Philabundance, the region’s largest hunger relief organization, and food collected through Philabundance goes directly to the families in need.

Road Closures Affect District Transportation

Approximately 450 acres of Pennsylvania State Game Land owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has been on fire since early yesterday, 9 April 2012.  The fire is 80% contained at this time.

Several roads and some bridges have been affected by these fires. Our district transportation office has been working as quickly as possible to gather accurate information, respond to transportation challenges, and alert families who are affected by any changes to regular bus service. We apologize for any busing interruptions. We will continue to monitor the situation closely throughout the day and post busing notifications and updates for this afternoon’s transportation to our website.
