Stocking Shelves

For eleven years, the Owen J. Roberts community has come together in October to fill the local food pantry as part of Make a Difference Day. The capstone event for the food drive is the actual unloading, sorting and stocking of the pantry. It is a big job, with a packed school bus, but the Owen J. Roberts Football Team helped to make the effort seamless this year. The team was in full force on Saturday morning, tackling the project with professionalism and efficiency! Team members and coaches were joined by volunteers from the High School Leo Service Club. Many regular food pantry volunteers were also working the event and were extremely happy for the support. In a matter of two hours, pantry shelves were stocked and organized.

Many thanks to all those who donated items to the pantry and to those who labored to make sure pantry shelves were loaded and coordinated. Thank you to Gross Bus Company for the use of the school bus and to driver Cindy Barnett for her hard work each year. Thank you to all the building coordinators, principals, and school clubs who managed drives at each district location, and a special shout out to Ms. Kira Rumpp for organizing Make a Difference Day for the third year. As part of Make a Difference Day, Friday's varsity football game will be a pink-out game in support of Unite for Her, a local organization who provides breast cancer support.

About Coventry Food Pantry

The Coventry Food Pantry serves families in the Owen J. Roberts School District and is located at the North Coventry Township Building. It is operated by volunteers and during the last year has served 122 families in our region which included 403 people!  Established over 30 years ago, the Food Pantry continues to assist area residents from all municipalities in the Owen J. Roberts School District. The Pantry now manages a backpack program serving 45 students in the district.

The Coventry Food Pantry is a provider for The Emergency Food Assistance Program for Northern Chester County.  To qualify for food through The Food Emergency Food Assistance Program families must meet certain residential and income guidelines.  If you are in need of food, please contact Ginny Wade at (610) 326-5659 for a phone interview.

OJR Families Make a Difference

On Friday, October 28, a school bus donated by Gross Bus Company left the high school at 9:00 a.m. with four capable NJROTC cadets on a nine-stop route which included all seven schools and two administration buildings. Driver, Cindy Barnett, carefully navigated the bumps and turns to keep the food from spilling over and coordinator Kira Rump kept the project on schedule!

East Vincent Elementary was the first stop. Classrooms competed with one another for a chance to be the first to tour the new building, so the drive produced impressive amounts of food for a great cause!

Students participated at each school to load the bus and it became readily apparent how generous Owen J. Roberts families are. Bus seats were loaded with canned goods, paper supplies and toiletries, all to be delivered to the Coventry Food Pantry the following day.

Seven Chapters of Best Buddies Convene

Today, the Owen J. Roberts Best Buddies hosted Best Buddies chapters from seven different school districts for the annual Fall Fest Celebration at Wildcat Stadium.

The fun-filled event allowed students to move around within inter-mingled groups through various Fall inspired activities. The day is full of newly-found friendships and bonding among students of many different backgrounds.

The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.  Best Buddies is the first unified, international program that pairs individuals with intellectual disabilities and college or high school students in one-to-one mutually enriching relationships. 

Owen J. Roberts High School is fortunate to be one of the over 1,200 Best Buddies chapters in Colleges and High Schools throughout all 50 states and 22 countries.  While participants find part of life’s fulfillment in friendship, the Best Buddies pairs are also examples to their communities of acceptance and support for people with intellectual disabilities.  

Best Buddies events are funded with the help of chapter fundraisers, sale of Best Buddies merchandise, community support, special events, private and corporate donations and Best Buddies grants.  Each member of the buddy pair pays for him or herself in one-to–one activities.

In-house College Visits

An admissions representative from Penn State University visited the high school yesterday as part of

a goal to increase in-house college visits. Use of scheduling software helps college admissions representatives easily schedule times to conduct small group informational meetings with students. Students can simply sign up to attend through Naviance technology. Having a representative on hand helps students screen colleges prior to visiting and helps them have important questions answered as they research best fit.
