Mock Crash 2017

The drama unfolded in real time with the realism of an actual crash response. Sponsored and funded by State Farm Insurance in cooperation with Paoli Hospital and the Main Line Health/Bryn Mawr Rehab’s Cruisin’ Smart Program, Owen J. Roberts High School hosted the 2017 Mock Crash event on Tuesday, April 25th The staged automobile crash was live theater creating a realistic demonstration of what happens at an accident scene when drivers may have been distracted or impaired.

The Mock Crash event featured professional actors from the Media Theatre as well as OJR student actors and a professional sound crew. Pennsylvania State Police, local municipal police, the OJRSD Security Department, Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, and emergency medical personnel from Goodwill Ambulance and Ridge Fire Company have been working together over the past months to coordinate this event in hopes of encouraging responsible driving behaviors among the community’s youth. Mr. Frank Gunson, first responder, introduced the crash scene to students. Mr. Chris Mulhall, PA Representative Becky Corbin's Chief of Staff, was in attendance for both the mock crash and assembly.

Following the outdoor presentation,  students assembled in the high school auditorium for the Main Line Health, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital’s “Cruisin’ Smart” assembly. Cruisin’ Smart emphasizes the importance of responsible decisions and highlight the dangers of driving while impaired or distracted. Lisa Eckenrode, nurse and paramedic, walked students through the actual scenario of the hospital trauma center showing photos of the waiting room where often parents have the excruciating and horrifying wait to find out if their child will be alright. A guest speaker named Bobby shared his honest first hand account of coping with life-altering injuries. He said, "This is the dream I never woke up from."

Mr. Dwayne Redd, State Farm Insurance Community Field Representative, informed students of potential financial impacts of an automobile accident. He thanked the student actors for portraying a difficult drama. Bryn Mawr Rehab’s “Cruisin’ Smart” Coordinator, Patricia Santoro, informed the audience that car crashes are the #1 killer of teens. Principal Dr. Rich Marchini invited students to look at the positive in every decision. "When you do good, good things come from it," he informed. He asked students to use their phones for good because every act, whether it is a message on social media, or a decision to text while driving, can impact others.
The mock crash and assembly are used in conjunction with a comprehensive education and prevention plan for Owen J. Roberts High School students including mandatory driver training class and optional behind-the-wheel driver training.

In honor of national DNA Day, check out some of the 97 very creative DNA models from Mrs. George's Biology students as part of her annual DNA model competition. The models are as unique as each of us!!!

According to the National Human Genome Research Institute, "National DNA Day is a unique day when students, teachers and the public can learn more about genetics and genomics! The day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, and the discovery of DNA's double helix in 1953."
