Enriching Summer

Global Food Exploration Camp
A variety of summer experiences and courses are offered in the summer at Owen J. Roberts. This summer, 502 students took advantage of the summer opportunities which included 24 enrichment activities and 7 accelerated courses. The most popular camps include fishing, baking, and arts & crafts. Many students take advantage of mathematics and science acceleration courses. There are many ways for high school students to take coursework that allows more flexibility in the regular semesters.

This week, students participated in a culinary exploration of foods from around the world in the Global Exploration Food Camp taught by Family and Consumer Science teacher Ms. Lindsay Hale. European, Asian and Latin American dishes and spices were explored. This morning, students were creating breakfast burritos.

Outstanding Best Buddies Chapter

Owen J. Roberts High School was awarded Outstanding Best Buddies Chapter for the 2017-2018 school year. Best Buddies enhances the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Best Buddies is the first unified, international program that pairs individuals with intellectual disabilities and college or high school students in one-to-one mutually enriching relationships.

Best Buddies is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in 1989. Owen J. Roberts High School is fortunate to be one of the over 1,200 Best Buddies chapters
in Colleges and High Schools throughout all 50 states and 22 countries. While participants find part of life’s fulfillment in friendship, the Best Buddies pairs are also examples to their communities of acceptance and support for people with intellectual disabilities. Best Buddies events are funded with the help of chapter fundraisers, sale of Best Buddies merchandise, community support, special events, private and corporate donations and Best Buddies grants. Each member of the buddy pair pays for him or herself in one-to-one activities.

The award was presented to rising Owen J. Roberts High School senior, Isabelle Gunson, at the Best Buddies Leadership Conference at Indiana University last week.Over 2200 students attended the conference from all around the globe.

According to the conference website, "Over the past 29 years, the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC) has inspired thousands of leaders to be Best Buddies advocates and to bring about social change in their communities. BBLC is a once in a lifetime experience that unites Best Buddies leaders, volunteers, and community advocates from around the globe. Conference attendees gain knowledge in order to effectively take action both individually and as part of a group for a common cause while discovering the importance of their actions, responsibilities, and energy."

Admins Assume New Roles

Congratulations to two Owen J. Roberts administrators who will be taking new appointments within the District for the 2018-2019 school year.
Dr. Richard Marchini will take the helm as Director of Pupil Services. Dr. Marchini was the principal at Owen J. Roberts High School for the past 11 years. He enjoyed working with high school staff and the students each day. He was very involved in giving students a voice in running the school through student government. He embraces a new position assisting students across the district, K-12. A transition plan is being developed for the hire of a new high school principal and families will be notified with details very soon. Dr. Marchini will continue to work with the high school assistant principals and entire team to be ready to welcome students in the fall. Please join us in wishing Dr. Marchini great success in his new role.
Mr. Corbin Stoltzfus was promoted to principal of Owen J. Roberts Middle School. He will replace Mr. Sean Burns, who has taken a position with another school district. Mr. Stoltzfus has a long history with Owen J. Roberts School District and has been involved in youth sports in the area for many years. He has a special connection with middle-level students and is excited to serve students in a new role. The district has opened a search for a new Assistant Middle School Principal. In the interim, curriculum supervisors will support Mr. Stoltzfus. The Middle School looks forward to welcoming students back including at this summer's exciting events: 7th Grade (ONLY) BBQ and Visit/Explore Building on Wednesday, August 15th 10:00-12:00 and a Visit & Explore Middle School for all MS families on August 16th & August 20th 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please join us in extending best wishes to Mr. Stoltzfus.

Wrestlers become Freestyle All-Americans

Two Wildcat Wrestlers just became Freestyle All-Americans. Antonio Petrucelli wrestled cadet 145 and placed 4th in the country going 7-2 over the weekend.  Daniel Mancini wrestled in arguably the toughest weight class in the tournament Junior 152 and placed 7th in the country going 6-2 over the weekend. Dan had a big win over Ian Wilcox from Utah in the round of 16 who is the second rank wrestler in the country at that weight class.  Antonio and Dan are the only two (2) All Americans from District 1 this year and are the first All American's from Owen J Roberts since Aaron Brown took second in the country in 1998.

Elephant Festival in Art

In Arts & Crafts camp this week, students learned about the Elephant Festival that takes place in the city of Jaipur, India each year. For the festival, the elephants are draped with jewelry and given majestic multi-color makeovers before doing a procession through the streets. Students are able to dream about what their animal many look like if presented to royalty and they have the opportunity to create their own marvelously decorated elephants.

Coventry Rugby News

This past weekend Coventry Rugby Wildcats participated in the Elizabethtown Rugby 7's tournament.  The Youth/U13, Junior/U15 and High School teams all played.

The Coventry Rugby High School team won first place beating out Elizabethtown, Carlisle, Hempfield and Berks County teams.  It was a great win for a young high school team now preparing for the fall Rugby 7's series in September and October.

Above is a photo of the players with their "winner's vests". The players represent the Owen J. Roberts community up-holding the club ideals of "Teamwork - Determination - Respect".
