Catch up on Sleep....Study...

Please see the 11-21-2019 letter from Dr. Marchini, Student Services Director, who has been working with the Board of School Directors Pupil Services Committee surrounding the topic of sleep health and the potential for delaying the start of the school day for secondary students:

Good Morning Everyone.

Please see the following links below in regards to adolescent sleep health and school start times. There is a link to a Delayed Start Survey that gives you a chance to choose one of the options available as your first choice and second choice.  I am also including links regarding the options, cost analysis and a video about sleep health from Wendy Troxel. Also included is the State Advisory Committee report on this topic. As you answer the questions, please refer to all of this information.  This link will be available until December 20th, 2019 to give everyone plenty of time to participate.

The data collected on the survey, along with information received from the community regarding options, challenges, and concerns, will be presented to the OJRSD School Board in January.   I appreciate everyone’s input and all of the rich discussion around this issue.  The most impressive component of the meetings I have attended as well as the many informal conversations I have had with staff and parents, is that everyone involved has had one goal in mind – student health and student success. Thank you for everyone’s very candid conversations and I am proud to be part of this learning community. See all links below.

Mu Alpha Theta

Students look over some of the resources Ms. Brandt uses in her civil engineering business
According to the Mu Alpha Theta website, "The Mu Alpha Theta National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club was founded in 1957 by Dr. and Mrs. Richard V. Andree at the University of Oklahoma. In his words, Mu Alpha Theta is "an organization dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education." The name Mu Alpha Theta was constructed from the Greek lettering for the phonemes m, a, and th."

This is the inaugural year for the honor society at Owen J. Roberts School District. On November 18, 2019, nearly 30 Owen J. Roberts High School students gathered to glean expert information from local civil engineer, Ms. Jennifer Brandt, who owns http://www.peirceengineering.com/. Ms. Brandt, a Drexel University graduate, spoke about how to succeed in college. She offered insights into the skills a civil engineer needs and which ones she uses on a typical day. Students were able to immediately appreciate the formulas they may learn in high school math and understand ways in which they may apply them in the future. Students were also made aware just how much speaking and writing may be used in any future engineering career.
